‘Friends’ (NBC) was the greatest show of all time and  I’m confident enough to say so.  It had the perfect formula for success with 3 guys and 3 girls who are all 30-something best friends living in the city, experience many adventures, hookups, breakups, and all to the sweet sound of a laugh track.  Introduce an episode of ‘Friends’ to anyone who has never really watched the show and they will instantly fall in love with Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey, Monica, and Chandler.

‘Friends’ aired for 10 wonderful years and there has not and will not be anything like it.  Today you will find 3 shows on major networks that are attempting to use the magical formula to recreate the perfect friend group.  However, we are not fooled and will not be swayed.

‘Happy Endings’ (ABC) premiered last night with one of the gals leaving one of the guys at the altar.  How original.  Rachel left her fiancé during the pilot episode of ‘Friends’ and on the ‘Perfect Couples’ (NBC) premiere two of the friends decide not to get married just before walking down the aisle.  ’Happy Endings’ also features 6 familiar characters that you will find uncanny resemblances to in ‘Friends’ and ‘Perfect Couples’ as well as a purple-walled apartment that will take you back to Monica’s trademark apartment.

‘Perfect Couples’ follows the ‘Friends’ path a bit less than ‘Happy Endings’ since the characters are all in relationships with each other, however ‘Perfect Couples’ seems to have taken a page out of the ‘Better With You’ (ABC) playbook, a show that I have enjoyed from the start.  ’Perfect Couples’ compares the lives at 3 couples who are all friends but are in different stages in their relationships.  ’Better With You’ also features 3 couples in different staged relationships, however the characters are related with the two girls being sisters and the oldest couple being their parents.  ’Better With You’ trumps ‘Perfect Couples’ because the characters are naturally funny and it is the only show out of the 3 that boasts a laugh track (a lost art).

There are so many similarities and comparisons between these 4 shows (as if the picture doesn’t say it all) that I could rant about the outrage all afternoon.  So I will leave you with the most important piece of information… Cammi’s official ranking:

4th- ‘Perfect Couples’ (Bad jokes and bad casting! Bleh!)

3rd- ‘Happy Endings’ (Funny moments… if you can get past the ‘Friends’ parallels)

2nd- ‘Better With You’ (Classic comedy that will make you want to hang with your sis)

1st- ‘Friends’ (Need I say more?)

Summer 2010 promises to be one full of opportunities for you to enjoy time together with friends and family. Starting with The Greatest Spectacle in Racing on May 30 to The Kings of Leon concert on September 30, there is something for everyone!

For those that love classic rock, it’s hard to beat Eric Clapton ( Verizon – July 2) or Chicago & The Doobie Brothers ( Verizon – July 22). Or how about Santana with Steve Winwood (Verizon – July 7)? Foreigner & Styx with Kansas (Verizon – June 25), Lynyrd Skynyrd (Verizon – June 27), Moody Blues (White River State Park – June 23) and Crosby, Stills & Nash (White River State Park – Aug 23) are also big favorites.

Country fans can call their friends to arrange a group outing to Verizon to see Brad Paisley (June 5), Tim McGraw (June 17), Brooks & Dunn (July 16) or Toby Keith ( Aug 28). Or grab a group and head out to the State Fair to see Rascal Flatts (Aug 7) or Keith Urban (Aug 14). Be sure to have a funnel cake while you’re there!

Of course race fans will want to see The Indianapolis 500 as well as the Brickyard 400 and Moto GP. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosts many a group year after year with traditions and memories abounding.

I have so much more appreciation for these teams as opposed to the Major League teams.  I think it’s simply because there seems to be an absence of attitude and a more genuine love of the game with these guys.

The Durham Bulls will be in town for 4 games, and tickets are available for  July 20 at 7:00pm, July 21 at 7:00pm, July 22 at 1:00pm, and July 23 at 7:00pm.

If you can’t get to one of these games during the week then you should plan to come on Friday July 24 when the Indians begin their home series against the Buffalo Bisons.  This is a Friday Fireworks game which promises to hold extra excitement against the backdrop of the downtown Indianapolis skyline.

There is nowhere to go but up for Indianapolis Indians fans this season. After posting a disappointing 68-76 record last season (International League West Division last place), the Indians look to improve this season. Fans in Indianapolis are used to winning championships and the Tribe hasn’t delivered since 2000.

Opening day for the Indians comes on April 9th against the Toledo Mudhens. The two square off in a four game home stand that should serve as an early test for the Tribe against a division rival. The club will once again offer its “weather guarantee” for opening day. A unique promotion for the past three season, the Indians guarantee a 60 degree temperature for the first pitch or fans receive a free ticket to another game this season.

Part of the rebuilding includes new leadership in the dugout. First year manager Frank Kremblas will skipper the Indians after a successful stint as manager of the Nashville Sounds. Despite a sub par showing last season, Kremblas lead Nashville to three straight division titles and the 2005 Pacific Coast League title. Indians fans will remember Kremblas from his playing days in Indianapolis. He played for the Tribe from 1993-1996 and was part of the Indians 1994 league championship team.

It looks like Indianapolis Indians fans will be treated to at least a few more months of Andrew McCutchen at Victory Field. Late indications show the Pirates front office is content to send the twenty-two year-old outfielder back to AAA for the start of the season. Although McCutchen is disappointed to not be with Pittsburgh for the opener against St. Louis, it’s unlikely that he will be in Indy for long.

In the meantime, the Pirates want McCutchen to work on driving the ball more consistently, improve his ability to bunt, and use his incredible speed more effectively on the base paths. Indianapolis fans will be well advised to head to the ballpark early this season as McCutchen could be called up any time. One of the great benefits of minor league baseball for fans is the ability to see future stars in a more intimate setting before they make headlines in the major leagues.

Indianapolis fans have been treated to more than their fair share of big league talent. Current Pirates Zach Duke and 2008 All Star Nate McLouth played for the Indians. They are joined by baseball greats like Randy Johnson, Andres Gallaraga, Moises Alou, Ben Sheets, Harmon Killebrew, Nap Lajoie, and Luke Appling as Indians alums.

Much of the Indians’ success has to do with how their big league counterparts fair. Much of the Tribe’s losing of late can be attributed to a lack of quality personnel provided by the Pirates organization coupled with the need for moving talented players up to fill the roster in Pittsburgh. With the Pirates being mired in last place, any player who shows a glimmer of talent gets called up immediately. This has left the cupboard bare in Indianapolis.

This trend could be coming to a close, as the Pirates look to climb out of the division cellar this season. That coupled with new leadership in Indianapolis, could mean a return to championship baseball for the Indianapolis Indians.
