Anyone? Anyone?

One year after finishing 2-14, the Colts now sit at 8-4 with a real shot at making the postseason. For a team with a rookie quarterback dealing with the emotional toll of having their head coach battle Leukemia, that would be quite the accomplishment. The Colts play five games in December, but only two will be in the friendly confines of Lucas Oil Stadium. Here’s a look at the two matchups:

Tennesse Titans (December 9)-The last time these teams squared off, the game went into overtime where Andrew Luck hit Vick Ballard to give the Colts a 19-13 win. Beating the Titans is nothing new for the Colts. The Colts have won 7 of the last 8 games against the Titans.

Houston Texans (December 30)- The Colts conclude the regular season with a home game against division rival Houston. The Texans have been an elite team this year and have their sights set on reaching their first Super Bowl. In a bit of a scheduling quirk, the Colts and Texans will play each other twice in three weeks. If the Colts want to start printing playoff tickets, they will probably have to win at least one of those matchups.

Football on Thanksgiving is one those beautiful traditions I didn’t appreciate until I was older. As a kid, I took the games for granted. They were always there. It wasn’t until I grew up and occasionally had to spend the holidays with people who didn’t watch football, that I truly missed it. There are few things in life more depressing than eating turkey while Lifetime movies play in the background.

Professional  football games go as far back as 1920. Before that colleges and high schools played on this day. The Detroit Lions have been a Thanksgiving fixture since the 1930’s. This year, the Lions square off against the Houston Texans. Although I’m not a Lions fan, I always root for  Detroit on Thanksgiving, if for no other reason than they always seem to lose.
The Dallas Cowboys, another Thanksgiving stalwart, will face off  against the Washington Redskins on Thursday. Despite their yearly presence on Turkey Day I will not be rooting for the Cowboys. Rooting for the Cowboys feels like rooting for the Yankees in baseball or the Lakers in basketball. It’s lazy and unimaginative. The only difference is those other teams have actually won championships recently.

For the night cap, the New England Patriots take on the New York Jets. Though it may be the unpopular choice in Indiana, I have a soft spot for the Patriots. The Patriots are a well run organization with quality players and a coach who dresses like a homeless man every week. Bill Belichick is one of those weird coaches who is extremely good at what he does and seems to have no personality to speak of. Listening to his postgame press conferences, it’s usually hard tell if his team won or loss. I suspect if he were to ever shed a tear, his head would explode. I find that to be an oddly endearing quality.

DO plan ahead. Pack the cooler up the night before (as much as you can) and bring a trash bag for after.

DO make a play list on your iPod to jam too while you are tailgating of course.

According to a study I recently made up, people with school spirit are 23.2 percent happier than those without it. I’ve decided the best way to rekindle my love for my alma mater is to attend a sporting event. Before I can do that, I  should probably decide which school to root for.

I spent half a decade matriculating the halls of Indiana University Purdue University- Indianapolis, or as the cool kids call it IUPUI. While IUPUI has sports teams, technically no one graduates from IUPUI. You’re either an IU or PU alum. Part of me wishes I graduated with a Purdue degree so I could tell people I went to the same school as Drew Brees, my adulthood hero. However, I am content saying I graduated from IU.

One of the best ways to ignite school pride is to attend a football game. There’s something about piling into a stadium with a couple thousand friends and watching large gentlemen pound the snot out other gentlemen that promotes bonding. As luck would have it, the Hoosiers have two home games this month. I’m thinking a road trip to Bloomington might be just what the doctor ordered.

October 6- Michigan State Spartans

According to my research, Michigan State was in the top 25 up until last week’s loss to Ohio State. My research also indicates the last time they played an Indiana team they lost 20-3. Technically that team was Notre Dame and not IU. However, I think it’s safe to say that MSU fears all Indiana teams. What’s that? Michigan State beat IU 55-3 last year? Hmmm…maybe I’ll check out the next home game.

October 13- Ohio State Buckeyes

I don’t need to do much research to realize this one has blowout potential. On the bright side, a road trip to watch this game would allow me to engage in one of my favorite sports hobbies: booing Ohio State. There’s something about Ohio State football that makes me ill. I think it has something to with the fact that they routinely beat up on weak teams, but get smacked around by other elite schools, especially those outside the Big Ten. My only concern is the Ohio State fans travel well and I worry and hate to get into a fight at my first IU game. I bruise like a peach.

I’m beginning to think I may need to find a different path to channel my inner Hoosier.

Why was I in a football poll you might ask if I just wanted to guess? It was fun!  I liked randomly picking and not really having a care about which way the games would go. After the first few weeks of my guessing game though I stopped and went and looked at the team rankings. With the help of my coworkers I would then make a better educated guess about who might win that week.

Believe it or not my guessing or better educated guessing did get my somewhere.  One lucky week my guessing won me $100!

Whether or not you guess in your football poll or make calculated choices each week, do you think you could predict the two teams to be in this year’s Super Bowl? The season is just starting but you probably can tell how some teams are going to be from last week’s showings OR you can just flip a coin and guess with me.

The first is obviously the competition.  It is great to have bragging rights over your friends when you beat them and you can brag all year long if you win the championship. For my league we have an added bonus because for the last 3 years we have done our draft at Buffalo Wild Wings and when you do that you get $100 Gift Cards and a Championship Flag.  When we hold our draft there my dad pays for everyone but then he keeps $90 of the gift cards and gives $10 to the winner.  That’s great to get a free meal from BW3, but the flag is what it’s all about.  My brother and my friend each have a flag and when I see it in their rooms it rubs me the wrong way, yes I’m very competitive.  Competition is always what drives the people in my league.

The second factor would be the ability to root for (or against) players on a lot of different teams.  Most people would only care about their favorite one or two teams and not pay much attention to any other games, but when playing fantasy football you could potentially have a player in over half of the games.  You’ll have an urge to keep checking the scores of those games to see how your player is doing.

Lastly, it’s so easy!  If you’re wondering why fantasy football has so many more players than baseball or basketball, this is why.  With fantasy football you only have to check your team once a week since that’s how often the teams play.  It’s not like basketball or baseball where there are games every night.  For people with busy schedules this takes 5-10 minutes per week to move your players around.  If you want to trade or add/drop players that’s only another few minutes, that’s it!

Those are the 3 reasons I like fantasy football and if you think there’s a more important reason you can post below and share your opinion!  The only downside to fantasy is when a main player on your team is playing your favorite team (the Colts for me), you have to decide if you want your player to score a lot or if you are going to root for your team.  It can be tough if you are close to winning your game. Fantasy Football is great fun between friends and I highly recommend starting a league at work or with family and friends.  The bragging rights are definitely worth it.

Ball State – Ball St. is coming off a 6-6 season, but was not invited to play in a bowl game (maybe unfairly).  This will be Head Coach Pete Lembo’s second year at the helm and he is looking to continue improving this team.  The offense returns 8 of 11 starters from last year, but only 5 starters on defense.  Last year the defense gave up the most points out of any team in the Mid-American Conference.  This year the Cardinals will be looking for their first bowl game since 2008 and if some of the new guys can step in on defense and play well, I think that is close to a reality.

Indiana – Indiana is coming off their worst season in recent history, 1-11. Coach Kevin Wilson is entering his second year at IU and hopes to turn it around.  He played 16 true freshman last year, including quarterback Tre Roberson, and hopes that the experience will pay off this season.  Indiana always has a tough Big Ten schedule, but this year is especially tough (ranking 4th toughest in the Big 10).  But if all goes according to plan, Indiana should at least double their wins from last year…maybe even triple! Click Here to buy tickets to IU home games!

Notre Dame – The only team from Indiana ranked in the preseason top 25 (they are 24).  The Fighting Irish went 8-5 last season, also the best out of any Indiana school, but was disappointed with it.  Notre Dame has some of the richest football history in the country and they are still trying to return to glory.  The Irish will have an extremely tough schedule this year facing 5 teams in the top 25 including the 3rd and 4th ranked teams.  Notre Dame always has the talent to surprise people, but will they?  Notre Dame is the big question mark this year. Click Here to buy Notre Dame tickets!

Purdue - Purdue had a productive season by their standards making and winning a bowl game and ending with a 7-6 record.  This year may also be Purdue’s best chance to better that record as they return 9 starters on each side of the ball…out of 11!  Purdue also will have a QB controversy going into the season as both Caleb TerBush and Robert Marve have starting experience for the Boilermakers.  No matter who they go with, Purdue’s defense is supposed to be very solid and if the offense comes along, this could be the year for the Boilermakers. Click Here to buy tickets to Purdue home games!

Away vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: If Andrew Luck is going to have nightmares about a preseason game this would be the one.  For as long as most can remember the Steelers have been known to attack on defense.  Luck may be in for a long game.

Away vs. Washington Redskins: The third preseason game is usually when the starters play the most.  Andrew will have to prove he can stand in the pocket for more than a quarter or so as the preseason winds down.

Home vs. Cincinnati Bengals: Hopefully Luck took notes during last year’s NFL season because the Bengal’s Andy Dalton pretty much wrote the book on what to do as a rookie quarterback in the NFL.  He was fantastic and now Luck will have to out duel him in the last tune up before the regular season. BOSS’S DAY IS OCTOBER 16, 2010!!!!! Even though they put a stage extention and eliminated a number a seats, I feel my wife and I had the best seats in the house. They were right there at the end of the runway. It will be interesting to see how many make it to the College World Series. My bet is with the Crimson Tide behind the lights out pitching of Kelsey Dunne to bring home another championship to the SEC.

Next, we turn to the ridiculously loaded world of SEC baseball. The SEC boasts 9 teams in the Top 25 of the RPI (FL, ARK, VAN, SC, ALA, AUB, UK, LSU, MISS). That is insane. Of course, it is hardly surprising. This weekend the SEC Baseball Tournament comes to the wonderful city of Hoover, AL (a city I am particularly fond of) to crown the champion of the best conference tournament in college baseball.

Who will take home the championship? Who knows, this field is loaded with good teams. Is not like Indiana or Ohio State are in the tournament, this field is solid from top to bottom with extremely talented teams. This ain’t no Big Ten baseball, ya’ll.

Let the championships continue to flow in….can’t wait until the College World Series to report on another SEC National Championship!

That however, it not the main purpose of this blog, I just wanted to include it.  Goodness knows I would never miss the opportunity to express how much better SEC football is than every other conference, but this blog is not about that.

Actually it is.  Just kidding.  This year the SEC set a new record with 49 players from the conference selected in the 2010 NFL draft.  That was 15 more players than the Big Ten had selected–30% more players!!

Not only did the SEC have the most overall players selected, they also had 23 players taken in the first three rounds–the “premium” rounds–more than the second place Pac-Ten which had 15.

So for 11 of the past 13 years the SEC has had the most players taken in the draft.

That is dominance.  Something the SEC knows well.  (And something the Big Ten knows by another form of the word, i.e. “dominated”).

Which brings me to my main point:   Colts Play Superbowl in Miami II was bound to disappoint.  The casting was similar, but missing a few key stars.  The wardrobe was mixed up a bit buy switching from white jerseys to blue.  The villain was a fresh opponent.  The set was changed from rainy Sunday to warm evening.  And of course the ending had to change in order to keep audiences in suspense.  Colts fans give this Miami re-do two giant foam thumbs down.

The sixth seeded Ravens will find a well rested and fired up Indianapolis Colts team lead by newly crowned league MVP Peyton Manning. The last time these two teams meet was Nov 22 in Baltimore. It is the holiday season and that means a couple of things: Lots of family time, the end of the NFL season and College Bowl season. This year it is hard to get excited about the Bowl season due the fact that there are 34 bowl games. Now, I understand that for the college athletes each and every bowl game is important but as a fan, why would I ever want to watch the New Mexico Bowl between Fresno St and Nevada or the Little Ceasars Bowl between Marshall and Ohio. These bowl games are pointless, I was flipping through the channels on Dec 26 and I just happened to turn on the Marshall and Ohio football game, the stands were about half full. This can not be a good situation for the BCS, the stadium, or the schools to have these games where they are loosing money. Instead of 34 bowl games they should have some sort of playoff. Maybe start the season a week earlier and get it all wrapped up before the athletes finals or start the playoffs after the finals. In the NFL there are two weeks between the Conference Championship game and the Super Bowl, why can’t the FBS do something similar. I think it would increase revenue and be great for college football.

On my mind this week is the Indianapolis Colts, as it seems is the case with many NFL loving Americans. With the team being 5-0, our Colts orders have been streaming in over the last couple of weeks, and even with a bi week and an away game this week, the home games are still in high demand. Ticket prices are high. Nachos and a beer at the new stadium require financing. For that kind of money Irsay and the Colts have got to deliver a good product to the fans.

They’ve done it in the past but given how fickle football fans can be the team can’t depend on past success to guarantee fan loyalty. “What have you done for me lately?” is the question on fan’s minds. Sure, the hardcore Colts faithful will always stick by their team. Unfortunately, the faithful don’t pay the bills. Mr. Painted Face makes for good window dressing but he ain’t paying for a suite.

Peyton Manning will retire soon. Obviously he’s the main attraction and a key driver for Indianapolis Colts tickets sales. Replacing him will not be easy. Fans will give him a chance though I imagine the honeymoon will be short lived.

Expect Bill Polian to be working his butt off during the upcoming draft. The Colts will have to wait until pick 27 in the first round. They won’t get any big stars with that pick, especially not a quarterback for Peyton to start mentoring. Polian and Irsay will find a way to get some solid veterans and some young potential, they always do. However, turning their schemes in to a trip to the post-season may be tough.

Dominic Rhodes did not help the Colts’ cause with all the media attention he’s been getting. Apparently, he got his feelings hurt when he wasn’t picked up by the team for another season. On one hand it’s just business. On the other it isn’t hard to understand why he feels the way he does. Running backs seem to be plentiful, though, so it’s doubtful his bad experience will do much damage to the Colt’s reputation. It’s hard to imagine anyone not wanting to play for them.

Before the end of the Manning era Indy would like to make it to one more Super Bowl. Getting there in the upcoming season is unlikely. An Indianapolis Colts’ season without a post-season would be sad. That dismal prospect may be avoided if they can pick up a few good players. If it doesn’t go well, hopefully fans will give them some slack as they try to build for down the road.

Since some disparaging early, early days in the late 1880s, the Fighting Irish have managed to secure 11 national championships. This is quite a feat for an independent Catholic college carrying a football team. The first was in 1924, under legendary coach Knute Rockne. That year, in the middle of Rockne’s career there, the team managed a 10-0 record and a spectacular win at the Rose Bowl game. Two more namings were added to Rockne’s resume in 1929 and 1930. Both years, Rockne’s team remained undefeated.

Frank Leahy, who coached in the 1940s, led a team picked by the AP wire as national championships in 1943, 1946, 1947, and 1949. Except for one loss in 1943, Leahy also led perfect seasons. The next championship went to the Irish in 1966, as Ara Parseghian led a 9-0 team to gain the selection by the AP and Coaches polls. In 1973, Parseghian proved his mettle with an 11-0 record, culminating in a sweet win at the Sugar Bowl. In 1977, Dan Devine’s team won the Cotton Bowl and eleven other regular season games. Despite their one loss, the team was named champions. In 1988, Lou Holtz, who led the team for more than a decade, marched through the season to win all 12 games, plus masterfully winning at the Fiesta Bowl.

Notre Dame, football’s Gold-mine, has some incredible accolades among the NCAA historical texts. They have the 2nd highest winning percentage, with 73.6%, only two tenths behind Michigan. They have the 3rd most wins behind Michigan and Texas. Of their 120 years of football, they only lost 12 of those seasons; over 100 of them were winning. Although Ohio State also has seven Heisman trophies, they did it with six winners. Notre Dame and USC went 7 trophies for 7 winners. The college also has claim to 48 players and coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame, the most of any NCAA team.

Since 1962, nearly all of the Notre Dame football players have graduated in four years. Only 13 players have left without finishing their degrees. Also notable is the 90% graduation rate of the team’s African American players, third behind Navy and Boston College. Speaking of Navy, the US Naval Academy shares a stat with Notre Dame: namely, most consecutive wins (losses in Navy’s case) over one opponent. That number is 43, a streak that was snapped in 2007. The Irish also had to do something with beginning and ending Oklahoma’s 47 game winning streak. They beat the Sooners in 1953 and again in 1957, bookending the remarkable run with two Irish victories.

The team is something special, for sure, and continues to be a recognizable icon of determined grit in the college football landscape.
